Learn to Knit:Casting On Stitches

Published by

Knitting is a great skill to learn, though it can be tricky to figure out in the beginning. Taught to me by my grandmother, knitting has become a relaxing pastime for me. I knit while watching TV, during long car rides, or while enjoying music. And I’m able to make cute things like scarves or hats for my friends and family!

When I started knitting, I found the actual motion of knitting fairly simple, but I struggled with casting on stitches. It can be difficult to understand the process, so here are my steps for casting on stitches!

This tutorial for Casting On Stitches has not been pattern-tested, so please leave a comment down below with questions or concerns!

Casting On Stitches

Materials Required

* For this example I’m using weight 4 yarn, and size 11 needles, but as this is to teach you how to cast on stitches for any project you are welcome to use any size yarn or needle you want!

  • Yarn
  • Knitting Needles

The Steps

  1. I use my left hand to cast on stitches, so I start by holding my hand, palm facing my body and my thumb up creating an L shape.

2. From there I take the end of my yarn and come under my hand, around the back of my hand and then come back through between my index and middle finger.

3. Now you have two strands of yarn! Take both and hold them with your middle, ring and pinky fingers.

4. You have created a loop, so take one of your knitting needles and put it through the center of the loop, then holding the top of the loop to the knitting needle pull the yarn back towards you, creating this shape: (pictured below)

5. Now you should have three loops! Take the needle, still holding it to the yarn from the center loop and push it up through the loop around your thumb.

6. Then, take your needle and push it down through the loop around your index finger, and pull it back through the loop around your thumb.

7. Let the loop around thumb slide off and you’ve casted on the first two stitches!

8. Now that you have your index finger between the two strands of yarn, take your thumb and push it through the two strands and pull them back into that original shape!

9. Repeat steps 4-7 until you’ve reached the desired amount of stitches!

Notes:

  • This is how I learned to cast on stitches when I’m knitting, I think there are other ways but this is my favorite. Comment it you have any questions, or tell us how you like to cast on stitches!
