Making a Mini Charm Pillow

Finished Size: 18.5″ x 18.5″

Let’s make this super cute (and super easy) pillow!

Mini Charm Packs, or precut packs of 2.5″ squares, are one of the most dangerous items in the fabric store. Their small size and large collection of fabric designs tempt even the strongest minded quilters to add to their stashes.

Unfortunately, if you’re anything like me, I often find myself purchasing tons of these little guys, and having no idea what to do with them!

So here’s one of my favorite Mini Charm Pack Pillow Patterns!

This Mini Charm Pack Pattern is one of my favorites to sit down and do in an evening while listening to an audiobook and sipping on a glass of wine. It’s so simple, it’s perfect for those nights where you don’t want to have to think.

This would even be a great Retreat Project! You and your friends could all pick out mini charm packs and coordinating fabrics on your way to the retreat, and then make pillows together as your first project of the retreat! Sew cute!!

This Mini Charm Pack 2.5″ Squares Pattern has not been pattern-tested, so please leave a comment down below with questions or concerns!

Enjoy!

Mini Charm Pillow Pattern

Finished Size: 18.5″ x 18.5″

By: Annie’s Quilt Shoppe

Fabrics Required:

  • 1 Mini Charm Pack OR
    • (36) 2.5″ squares
  • 2/3 Yard of Sashing Fabric
  • 1/2 Yard of Border Fabric
  • 1/2 Yard of Backing Fabric

Now that you’ve collected all of your fabric, it’s time to cut!

If you’ve used anything other than a Mini Charm Pack, you will need to cut (36) 2.5″ squares in addition to the instructions listed below.

Cutting:

From your Sashing Fabric, cut:
  • (1) 2.5″ x WOF strip. Subcut into:
    • (30) 1″ x 2.5″ strips
  • (16) 1″ x WOF strips. Subcut into:
    • (7) 1″ x 14.5″ strips and
    • (2) 1″ x 15.5″ strips
From your Border Fabric, cut:
  • (4) 2″ x WOF strips
From your Backing Fabric, cut:
  • (2) 18.5″ x 13″ pieces

Now it’s (finally) time to sew!! We used a 1/4″ seam unless otherwise noted.

Sewing:

To begin:

Take (6) of your 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares and (5) of your 1″ x 2.5″ strips and sew them together starting with a 2.5″ x 2.5″ square, and alternating with the 1″ x 2.5″ strips. (See diagram for layout).

Repeat to make 6 rows total.

To Assemble:

Sew your 6 pieced rows together starting with 1″ x 14.5″ strips, alternating.

Sew the (2) 1″ x 15.5″ on the top and bottom

Attach the border by following our borders method below:

Adding Borders

Measure width of Pillow Top (should be close to 16″) and add 3″ (should be close to 19″). Trim (2) of your Border Fabric strips to be 2″ x 19″. Pin both strips of fabric along the top of the pillow. Cut the excess fabric off of the edges. Unpin. Sew 1 strip of fabric to the top of the pillow, and 1 strip to the bottom of the pillow.

Measure length of Pillow Top (should be close to 19.5″) and add 3″ (should be close to 22.5″). Trim (2) of your Border Fabric strips to be 2″ x 22.5″. Pin both strips of fabric along the right side of the pillow. Cut the excess fabric off of the edges. Unpin. Sew 1 strip of fabric to the right side of the pillow, and 1 strip to the left side of the pillow.

Finishing the Pillow

To finish the pillow, grab (1) of your 18.5″ x 13″ pieces. Fold the 18.5″ side over about 0.5″ and press, and then repeat the fold and press a second time to create a hem. Top stitch over the folds to secure. Repeat with the second piece. Attach the two pieces to the pillow by laying them on top of the pillow top with RST, and the hemmed edges in the center. There should be one backing piece overlapping the other. Stitch around the edges, making sure to backstitch a couple of times when going over the hems to increase stability.

And there you have it! A super cute Mini Charm Pack Pillow so you can proudly display all of those adorable Mini Charms you picked up at the quilt shop!
